22 Mar 11 Taxi firm Manganese Bronze secures biggest order

Manganese Bronze has won its single largest order for its distinctive black taxi cabs in a deal worth $27m (£17m). The company, with its Chinese partner Geely Automobile, is supplying 1,000 vehicles to Azerbaijan. So far this year, orders for cabs have come from customers in France, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Manganese also posted a reduction in pre-tax losses by £1m to £6.3m, on sales down to £69.6m from £73.1m, in what it said was a “difficult year”. However, chief executive John Russell said a restructuring and rebranding of operations was going well and that Manganese was “well positioned to return to profitability in 2011″. Geely owns 20% of Manganese, which switched production from Coventry to China as part of its restructuring. Manganese said it is on course to return to profit in 2011 after its restructuring

Click to play AT&T and T-Mobile create biggest US firm in $39bn deal Deutsche Telekom has sold T-Mobile USA to rival AT&T for $39bn (£24bn), creating the largest US wireless network. The deal sent Deutsche Telekom shares surging. They opened 16.3% higher – a record jump – and closed 11% up. In New York, AT&T shares gained 1.3%. The deal still needs approval from regulators. It also gives the German telecoms giant the cash to buy back shares and pay dividends. Deutsche Telekom said it would pay 3.4bn euros ($4.8bn; £3bn) in dividends between 2010 and 2012, pay down debt and spend 5bn euros on share buy-backs in the three years after the deal. AT&T will pay $25bn in cash and the rest in stock, while Deutsche Telekom will retain an 8% stake in the US carrier. The deal means that AT&T is effectively about spending more than $1,000 per T-Mobile customer to overtake the industry leader Verizon Wireless. If the deal is approved, AT&T will have about 43% of the US mobile market. Regulatory approval AT&T has been looking to increase its network capacity to handle the rapidly increasing consumer [...]

22 Mar 11 Tokyo Electric Power to pay farmers for radiation loss

Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) will have to compensate farmers for losses caused by the nuclear radiation leaking from its power plants, Japan has said. The firm will have to take responsibility, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano at a press conference. Japan has banned all shipments of leaf vegetables, spinach and milk from the area around Fukushima. The government has urged calm saying health risks are limited. “Even if you eat contaminated vegetables several times, it will not harm your health at all,” said Mr Edano. The World Health Organisation (WHO), however, said the radiation impact was becoming more serious than first thought. “It’s safe to suppose that some contaminated produce got out of the contamination zone,” said Peter Cordingley, spokesman for the WHO. Mounting costs Adding to Tepco’s worries are the fears of contamination in the water. High levels of radioactive iodine were detected in the water around the plant. The government has urged some residents to stop drinking tap water. All this is unfolding while Tepco continues to try and bring the nuclear power plant under control. The cost of cleaning up the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant as well as compensating victims is likely to be in the [...]
